(us) wrote: I used to watch this movie when I was a child together with my siblings and I loved it. The story is great and it has a great morale to it. The music kinda stuck to my head, I can still remember the songs from this movie. This was a great movie for children back in my childhood years and it might still be great to show to kids nowadays.

I sat down with no expectations whatsoever and became engrossed in the film by the atmosphere or Mise-en-scene unfolding in the first ten minutes. In the horror genre I thought it was refreshingly balanced against all the slasher fare and over-the-top technical olympics we get from the Hollywood franchises. It is definitely a creepy film that captures the isolation of dread and evil. The horror comes from your own imagined terror and not the kind handed to you on a platter prefabricated by special effects artists. When the special effects do appear (done by Lord of the Rings' WETA digital by the way) they're effective and affective while they serve the horror intrinsically and don't seem like too much chrome on a Cadillac, to force an analogy. If you've been interested in anything about Aleister Crowley or Dante's Divine Comedy, Lovecraft's Cthulu Mythos or other primal horror then this film will give you a chilling recrudescence. If you just want a chaotic cascade of blood guts and jiggling imperiled teenaged tits then you need to rent a Jason, Friday the 13th, Final Destination or Freddy Kruger flick. Freddy notwithstanding, The Devil's Rock is a more cerebral approach to the horror genre.
