Antti "Zombie" Autiomaa does two things well: play the bass guitar and drink. After several months' sleeping on the streets of Istanbul, he returns to Helsinki where he's called into the army but discharged on mental health grounds after adding turpentine to the officers' soup. Zombie lives bleary-eyed in an apartment off his parents' house where his lonely, unemployed father suffers from heart disease. His girl-friend Marjo has taken up with a hairdresser but comes back to Zombie. His friend Harri hires him as a roadie for his band "Harry and the Mulefukkers" then gives him a chance as a bass player. He has his girl and he has a gig, but can Zombie put the bottle down?

The film actually made me realize the difference between the political fears of the younger vs older generations. Like if you watch a old film about politics you'll notice the rampant fear of communism and government, but now the younger generations fear corporate rule....people need to just realize that neither is better than the other. In my opinion it's always been about people with power against people without....but that's a rant for another day.

I thought the coach would have been a better match with keira knightly. It would have been better plot wise too, because fighting over the coach made the girls' friendship very superficial. It was pretty funny, it had some somewhat touching moments, but it was a typical cliched film, with a typical cliched ending. There was no development of keira knightly and the main girl's friendship in the end, and i feel like it was too long. The stuff in the middle (with them going to germany) could have been cut out. It would have cut the movie down, and also would have been better for character development. The film had a positive message, and was overall, a very good average film.

Yes, you've got it, this is a snatch of early 1970's melancholia about down-and-out people going nowhere. Stacy Keach is a revelation as the has-been boxer at the center of the picture, falling in with drunk Susan Tyrrell (loose and sloshed) and encouraging impossibly young Jeff Bridges to take up fighting. He's deeply ambivalent about his dreams, probably realistically so, seeing that he's screwed up too much - that last weird zoom shot tells a lot. So over 90 minutes or so, we get a look at the flophouses, bars, fruit-picking operations, and of course boxing rings and gyms of Stockton, California, at its most run-down. I'm hooked on this feeling.

Everything from the new technology, a female M with Judi Dench, and the experimental soundtrack. This film does tone down the action set-pieces for more spy-work. Not to say that there isn't action. The opening scene in the Soviet Chemical Plant was intense with two of the most amazing stunts. Pierce Brosnan plays a good James Bond. He was the first James Bond I was introduced to so he has a special place in my heart but looking at him now, I can tell that he is a tone-down version of the previous actors. Not as classy as Roger Moore and not as bad-ass as Dalton. But he gets the job done with the support of two of my favourite bond girls. Xenia Onatopp and Natalya Simonova. Both aren't just damsels in distress. Both are active characters who actually contribute to the plot. Overall. A very solid bond picture.

I saw this out of interest having heard that it was Paddy Considine's writing/directing debut, and having seen that it had received decent reviews. Then when the opening credits rolled and I saw Peter Mullan was in it, I knew I was in for a treat. How neither Mullan nor his equally amazing co-star Olivia Colman didn't receive Oscar nods, let alone wins, is beyond me. The same goes for Considine whose activities I'll be watching intently now in the hope of another stellar effort like this. I'd love to recommend it to anyone, but it's pretty brutal, and whilst redemptive, is still bleak at times, and is most certainly not for animal lovers (well I'm an animal lover, but if violence against animals on screen isn't something you can watch, steer clear... it's incidental and instrumental, not gratuitous, but it's there).
