(jp) wrote: I saw it yesterday at the cinema with my friends. It was an epic anniversary movie. I never thought it would be so good after the fail of the first movie. I would recommend this one to any Yu-Gi-Oh! fan. If you're not into Yu-Gi-Oh! then please don't watch it because you will not understand anything that's happening and you'll definitely give it a horrible review. You have to keep in mind that this was made for people who watched (or are watching) the cartoon show(s). It was short, yeah, but better than a two-hour one which would've been repetitive/boring or something like that. This movie gets a 4.5/5 from me. Period. Eh, and buy the DVD of it!

(kr) wrote: It seems director Pen-Ek Ratanaruang thought he had a winning formula with "Last Life in the Universe" and, depending on who you are, you either agreed or disagreed after seeing "Invisible Waves." Although the plot is different, everything else is the same: deliberately paced narrative, same lead actor, and Christopher Doyle cinematography (which is always a safe move). I, for one, enjoyed this movie, although it seems people either really liked it or liked it not at all. It isn't without its faults; while the usage of multiple languages played out extremely well in "Last Life," the overabundance and strange reliance on English in "Waves" proves to be more awkward than not, especially in a climatic scene near the end. This, in some ways, also hinders the talented Asano Tadanobu from achieving his best. While "Last Life" dealt with the idea of escape, "Waves" (while still utilizing escapism) deals primarily with overwhelming guilt. I think the themes are dealt with reasonably well, especially in a half hour cruise ship segment that pretty much symbolizes the meaning of the entire movie. The ship scenes also invoke an unsettling, almost supernaturally tense atmosphere that is quite impressive for a film that isn't really a thriller (I likened them to certain aspects of "The Shining"). It was the sort of creepiness actual horror movies could stand to learn from. So, while "Last Life" is hands down a superior film, I feel "Waves" is certainly worth a gander by the casual viewer, and definitely worth a look by Pen-Ek fans.
